Janfie van Strien – Soprano saxophone

Janfie started out playing drums and sax in several punk and hardcore related bands in the Early 1980’s.Then he suddenly realized that playing music had become his main activity in life and he gained entry into Groningen Conservatory and studied saxophone where he graduated in 1997.
In the meantime he’d found out the world has a lot more to offer musically than just the jazz and classical music taught at Conservatory. Listening to great Jazzplayers and Worldmusic from different continents expanded his musical language.
Playing jazz, northern and western African music, Rocksteady and Ska, Balkan and Klezmer, led him to play blends of all these styles, incorporating all these different musical influences.
Janfie is played and composed for groups that combine these influences, bands such as: modern world-groove orchestra called Jammah Tammah, contemporary Jazz quintet Cousin X, the hot Afrobeat-latin Balkan jazz septet Bernie’s lounge, the Amsterdam Klezmerband, Rolinha Kross kwartet and Chefcat (Balkan fusion with Macedonian gypsy singer Sefkat Useinov).
He worked on projects with Khaled, François Thuillier, Michael Vatcher, Serge Adam en Michel Godard. As a session musician he can be found on various albums, differing from pop to world music projects.
Janfie currently owns and plays the whole variety of the saxophone family, including Baritone and Sopraninosax. Since he started playing Balkan music he picked up the clarinet too.
